Client Stories
Doug
When the Mission first opened its doors in 1998 our goal was to provide more than meals and a place to stay for those who were homeless, in need or addicted. Fortunately for Doug, we were here to do just that when he was released from a local hospital with nowhere to go!
“I was hit by a vehicle while crossing a street. I had a broken arm, a fractured pelvis and my shoulder was dislocated. The hospital taped me up, gave me some pain medication and released me. A friend was pushing me around town in a wheelchair because I couldn’t push myself.”
Doug had been living on the street before his accident, but with his injuries that became nearly impossible. “I’d been to the Mission before to eat and shower but I had never stayed overnight.
The day I came in my wheelchair, they were expecting storms so they let me stay overnight.”
In addition to providing food and shelter and making sure he saw the doctor in our medical clinic, the Mission helped Doug get the military benefits he was entitled to. “They told me about a 3-day military stand down over in Dixon. Once I got my ID there, I was able to apply for housing.” Thankfully, there was a room available in the home where our New Life Program men live and Doug was able to stay there until he found his own place.
The problems Doug faced are not unique, but they are becoming more complex all the time: limited affordable housing, reductions in social services and the recent recession have meant that more individuals and families than ever are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless.
Your support of the wide variety of Christian services offered by Mission SOLANO are sometimes the only “safety net” helping homeless and needy people overcome the crisis situations in their lives. Thank you.
